The survey questions below were developed using John Wooden's Pyramid of Success
Why did we use John Wooden's Pyramid of Success to develop survey questions?
Using John Wooden's Pyramid of Success for coach evaluations can provide a holistic and character-based approach to understanding a coach's effectiveness. Wooden's pyramid emphasizes core values and qualities that contribute not only to winning games but to building strong teams and well-rounded athletes. Here are some key reasons for using it in coach evaluations:
Focus on Character and Leadership: Wooden’s pyramid places significant emphasis on qualities like industriousness, enthusiasm, loyalty, and team spirit, which are essential for a coach’s character. Evaluating coaches on these values encourages them to model positive behaviors that can inspire athletes.
Balanced Approach to Success: The pyramid doesn't focus solely on winning; it promotes success in broader terms. It suggests that true success comes from preparation, cooperation, and hard work, which are critical to developing both a positive team culture and players' personal growth.
Personal Development and Team Dynamics: The principles in Wooden’s pyramid encourage coaches to foster an environment where athletes learn skills that extend beyond the sport, such as self-discipline, resilience, and responsibility. This creates a lasting impact, as players can carry these qualities into other areas of life.
Consistency in Standards: Using the Pyramid of Success provides a standardized but flexible framework to assess coaches across various situations and sports. It ensures that coaches are evaluated on their alignment with the organization’s values rather than solely on quantitative outcomes like wins and losses.
Encourages Long-term Growth: The pyramid emphasizes continuous improvement through attributes like patience, adaptability, and integrity. By evaluating coaches on these traits, organizations can promote a growth mindset that goes beyond immediate results, focusing on developing both the coach’s and team’s potential over time.
